Wanda Sykes Reveals Breast Cancer Condition to Ellen Degeneres
Earlier this week comedian Wanda Sykes revealed heart wrenching information about accidentally discovering a stage zero cancer called DCIS (ductal carcinoma in situ).
Doctors discovered the cancer when Wanda got a breast reduction February 2011. Instead of waiting to see if the cancer would develop Wanda opted for a double/bilateral mastectomy.
“I was very, very lucky,” said Wanda while speaking with Ellen Degeneres. “I had the choice of – you can go back every three months and get it checked, have a mammogram, or MRI every three months just to see what its doing. But I’m not good at keeping on top of stuff. I’m sure I’m overdue for an oil change and a teeth cleaning already. I have a lot of breast cancer history on my mother’s side of the family, which I didn’t know about.“
Wanda went on to explain why she was hesitant to tell the public about having cancer. “How many things can I have,” said Wanda. “Black, lesbian… I’m like – I can’t be the poster child for everything.”
Wanda is lucky the doctors found the cancer early. Most women aren’t that lucky. Ladies have to remember get a breast exam at least once-a-year.
