Apparently, a distraught tourist threatened to commit suicide by jumping off the Rock Observation Deck in front of hundreds of people.

According to NyDailyNews: “People stopped in their tracks near Fifth Ave. and W. 50th St. for almost an hour and watched in disbelief as Jorge Ruiz, 23, started taunting the crowd from the 70th-story ledge about 3:50 p.m., sources said. He had an American flag bandanna wrapped around his face.

“It was like he was playing a game,” said Priscila Garcia, 49. “He was standing up and sitting down.”

Ruiz, whom police sources said was visiting from Las Vegas, got onto the 30 Rockefeller Plaza ledge by climbing a 6-foot-high glass barrier. Officers from the NYPD’s Emergency Service Unit swarmed the observation deck as Ruiz tossed several objects onto the streets.

Ruiz, who suffers from schizophrenia, told cops he was distraught that a book he wrote wouldn’t be published, sources said.

“It was hectic,” said Simon Bullinger, 34, a tourist from Denmark. “Kids were crying.”

Cops ordered everyone at the Top of the Rock to leave one at a time, said Bullinger, noting he recognized that the man on the ledge had shared an elevator with him on the way up to the observation deck.

“I noticed him because of his clothing,” he said. “He was wearing a denim shirt and a white tie, but his trousers had holes. From the waist down, he looked like a bum.”

An NBC worker said a live feed of the wild scene was broadcast in the company’s newsroom, causing a near-standstill.

“The office was incapable of working once we caught wind of this guy,” said Erich Sturm, a producer. “Every time he tried to stand, everyone in the office freaked out, because we thought he was going to jump.”
