Italian Cruise Ship Crashes, Bodies Missing, Some Found Dead

A luxury Italian cruise ship ran aground off the west coast of Italy near Giglio island late Friday night. The crash injured several people, took the lives of 3 passengers and 69 people are still missing.

According to the New York Post, “Three bodies were recovered from the sea and news reports said 69 people were still unaccounted for after the Costa Concordia ran aground off the tiny island of Giglio near the coast of Tuscany late Friday, tearing a 160-foot (50-meter) gash in its hull.

The ANSA news agency quoting the prefect’s office in the province of Grosseto as saying that authorities have accounted for 4,165 of the 4,234 people who had boarded the liner. There were reports that three other people had died but those reports were not yet confirmed, said Coast Guard Cmdr. Francesco Paolillo.

By morning Saturday, the ship was lying virtually flat off Gigio’s coast, its starboard side submerged in the water.”
