A new rule in California by Bill Monning called Assembly Bill 1678 prohibits mobile food trucks from vending within 1,500 feet of elementary and middle schools during semesters.

Although the Bill sounds catchy, what it really does is limit vendors by location while ignoring fast food restaurants.

“All students deserve access to healthful food,” said Bill Monning during a press conference. “The mobile vending of unhealthful snacks like ice cream, chips, and sugar sweetened beverages near school campuses undermines efforts to provide students with the nutrition they need. At a time when childhood obesity is at epidemic levels, we must ensure that our school environments foster student wellness.”

Monning however, neglected to mention fast food restaurants like McDonalds, Burger King, Wendy’s, etc. in the press release. Assembly Bill 1678 falls short of fair judgement. Once again, the big fast food restaurant wins and the local business owner who works to make a living is axed out of the neighborhood.
