Egyptian Entertainers Refuse to Give-up Belly Dancing for Islamist

Islamist have made sizable gains In the first round of Egypt’s parliamentary elections… scaring the belly dancers and entertainers in the country. If Islamists win the election people fear they will ban freedoms, entertainment and tourism… a huge percentage of Egypt’s economy.

Veteran belly dancer Lucy made published statements in the Daily Al Shorouq, saying “Egypt can prosper like Turkey – where an Islamist party reached power without banning entertainment and tourism, which are key sources of the national income.”

Islamists consider belly dancing to be “immoral and un-Islamic” because it displays the female body in a provocative manner with minimal clothing.

The daily Al Shorouq quoted two other dancers, Safwa and Samara, as saying “This is our job, which we will not give up. Belly dancing is an art like any other form of art.”

Egyptian entertainers in multiple genres of entertainment have considered leaving the country.
