Did Sparkle Live Up To Expectations Or Did Sony Dissapoint In Opening Weekend?
Jordin Sparks debut as an actress. Whitney Houston’s last film before her untimely death – her final feature appearance. The 1976 Warner Bros. Pictures remake (produced by Stage 6 Films – released by TriStar Pictures) hit theaters this weekend and box office numbers are extremely low.
“Sparkle (2012)” debuted at number 5 with an estimated $12 million in its opening weekend. With original expectations of $20 million Sony’s musical remake did not draw a multicultural crowd. The cast is star-studded, packed with heavy names such as Jordin Sparks, Carmen Ejogo, Derek Luke, Mike Epps, Tika Sumpter, Omari Hardwick and Ceelo Green.
A heavy advertising budget was equaled by sizable competition with Lionsgate’s “The Expendables 2″ arriving in theaters at the same time. The second installment of The Expendables opened at No. 1 with earnings of $29 million.
Focus Features’ animated adventure “ParaNorman” came in at No. 3 with $14 million, surpassing Sparkle by two slots at the box office. Distributed by Walt Disney Pictures “The Odd Life of Timothy Green” was No. 7 with $10.9 million.
